Young people's programme: exploring reality
Saturday 7 December 2019 11am - 3pm
The Clore Learning Centre, Burlington Gardens, Royal Academy of Arts
Free for young people aged 15 - 19. Booking required.
Learn how to depict different kinds of reality within an artwork in this free, full-day workshop for young people aged 15-19.
Through a combination of discussion-based games and exercises in observational drawing, artist Jack Garfield will show you how to create different levels of reality within an artwork. By shifting from colour to black and white or changing drawing styles and materials, you will learn how to create distinctions between the real world and the imagined world often depicted in art.
During the session, references will be made to a variety of resources and media, including great painters from art history such as Henri Matisse, Diego Velazquez and Edouard Manet, as well as examples from popular culture including the films of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and the fictional programme Itchy and Scratchy from The Simpsons.
Jake Garfield studied at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Drawing School. Through printmaking, he explores the relationship between images and reality in contemporary life. In 2018 Jake launched Line of Thought, which provides workshops at the intersection of art and philosophical discussion at institutions including The Royal Drawing School, The Royal College of Art and The Whitechapel Gallery. He is the recipient of the Royal Drawing School Printmaking Prize in 2013, the Durham Wharf Award in 2015 and the Printmakers Council Prize in 2016.
Our new young people's programme invites students from all backgrounds, aged 15 to 19, to take part in practical art workshops. Led by professional artists, these free, day-long sessions will take inspiration from our world class exhibition programme and the RA Collection, working with new materials and discussing different approaches to making art.
