A symposium in association with the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain marking 300 years since the publication of ‘Vitruvius Britannicus’.
In 1715 the Scottish architect, Colen Campbell, published the first volume of Vitruvius Britannicus – a survey of the current state of British architecture and manifesto for its future direction. Followed by further volumes in 1717 and 1725, Vitruvius Britannicus became one of the most important and influential books in the history of British architecture, inspiring architects at home and abroad.
To mark the tercentenary of its publication, Vitruvius Britannicus is the subject of this year’s symposium of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain. The RA is hosting the symposium at its home, Burlington House, which Campbell was commissioned to remodel in the Palladian manner by Lord Burlington shortly after the first volume of Vitruvius Britannicus was published. Standing as the built counterpart to Campbell’s printed manifesto, there is no more fitting place than the RA’s Burlington House to discuss this important publication and re-evaluate its reception and legacy.
