This course will look at the changing trends in jewellery design throughout history including art movements such as Art Deco and Art Nouveau. We will learn about the jewellery trade and great jewellery collections including collections of international royalty. The course will also address the underlying ethical questions of jewellery. The course will cover:
- The history of jewellery design
- The jewellery trade
- Gems and gemstones
- Iconic jewellery collections
The course is led by jewellery experts and cultural historians. This is an eight-week lecture series taking place every Tuesday evening in the Benjamin West Lecture Theatre and each lecture is facilitated to encourage discussion.

About the speakers
Professor Emiritus, Courtauld Institute of Art
Aileen has published many books and articles on various aspects of the history of dress. Books include The Art of Dress: Fashion in England and France 1750-1820; Facing Beauty. Painted Women and Cosmetic Art. Her most recent book is Clothing Art. The Visual Culture of Fashion 1600-1914, winner of the Apollo Book of the Year Award 2017.
Chairman of Sotheby’s Jewellery Division, Europe
Daniela is one of the leading scholars on the history of jewellery. Daniela has been a jewellery specialist in the auction house for 40 years and is a leading scholar on the relationship between jewellery design and political, social and dress history.
Jewellery Specialist
Geoffrey Munn is a jewellery specialist, historian and writer, best known as a television presenter on BBC Antiques Roadshow. He was formerly Managing Director of Court Jewellers, Wartski, which he joined age 19. He specialises in nineteenth century jewellery, especially Fabergé.

Joanna has over 35 years’ experience as a fine jewellery specialist, including for Sotheby’s, De Beers and Phillips the Auctioneers. She is a regular jewellery specialist on BBC Antiques Roadshow and is a Fellow of the Gemmological Association, a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, and Court Assistant of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.
Founder, Louisa Guinness Gallery
Louisa Guinness, a pioneer of the genre "Jewellery made by Artists", set up the Louisa Guinness Gallery in Mayfair in 2003. The Gallery is the first ever dedicated space to exclusively exhibit artists’ jewels, and their collection includes pieces by Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso and Man Ray.
Dealer, Humphrey Butler Ltd
Robert Leigh-Pemberton began his career in jewellery at Sotheby’s where he worked on sales in both London and Geneva. In 2016 he joined Humphrey Butler Ltd and deals in fine jewels from their offices in Pall Mall. He has placed objects into some of the country’s most important private jewellery collections and overseen sales to national museums.
