Sarah Pickstone: An Allegory of Painting
Drop in for a free 15-minute talk to unearth the hidden stories of the Royal Academy.
This talk will introduce An Allegory of Painting, a project by artist Sarah Pickstone that celebrates the life and work of Angelica Kauffman RA. The project was commissioned to mark the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2018 and was part of a National Lottery Heritage Fund project to reveal the history of the RA.
Pickstone created two new paintings inspired by Kauffman’s The Elements of Art, 1778-80, that are in the RA Collection. Kauffman was one of only two women founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768 and Pickstone was keen to re-examine and explore her work in a contemporary context, looking at the history of women artists at the Royal Academy and more generally.
