John Constable RA made hundreds of rapid oil sketches directly from nature, often recording fleeting moments of clouds, rainstorms or the fall of light on water in his pursuit to become a ‘natural’ painter. The size of his studies were often prescribed by the size of his sketching paint box. As he explained to his friend John Fisher, he was sending some sketches that “were done in the lid of my box on my knees as usual”.
