SEN schools week: art as experience
Monday 26 September - Sunday 2 October 2016
Meet in the Front Hall, Burlington House, Royal Academy of Arts
Free, booking required.
Abstract Expressionism
Supported by The Lord Leonard and Lady Estelle Wolfson Foundation
Our tailor-made multi-sensory workshops are led by experienced artist educators for students with special educational needs. They include gallery based conversation and object handling, followed by an art making session.
American artist Robert Motherwell said ‘Art is an experience, not an object.’ Abstract Expressionist painters explored new ways of creating art and changed the way we experience it. Students will be supported in spending time in the galleries to experience the abstract canvases of Abstract Expressionism. They will experiment with new ways of mark making, whilst creating their own artworks in response to the work of these experimental artists.
Before booking, please note that these sessions are more successful when we work with a distinct class group, rather than a group that combines pupils from different classes or age groups. Call 020 7300 5995 for more information.
• Sessions run from 10.30am–2pm.
• Workshops are tailored to the needs of every group.
• We use multi-sensory props to engage students with art.
• Whenever possible, our experienced artist-educators will visit your group before the workshop.
• Specially trained RA Access Volunteers support all workshops.
• The Learning Studio, available for the sole use of your group throughout the day, is a private area that can be used for lunch, feeding and changing.
• We reserve parking spaces for SEN Schools workshop days, but we will need details of your vehicle registration at least 2 weeks prior to your trip if you plan to make use of these.
• All areas of the main building of the Royal Academy are accessible.
• An accessible unisex toilet is on the ground floor.
We welcome SEN schools for workshops during our programme of Special Schools Weeks, which run four times a year.
