Gauguin and the Impressionists
Terms and conditions
Join the RA for this important and timely weekend course to learn about and discuss postcolonial and decolonial studies in the fields of art and art history.
The course will take the RA’s exhibition Gauguin and the Impressionists as a platform to discuss theories, ideas and interpretations of postcolonial studies in art. It will explore recent and contemporary thought and interpretations to better understand art and art history.
Engage with a range of speakers – from artists, curators, art historians, critics and sociologists – through lectures and panel discussions.
On Day 1, we will look specifically at Gauguin, exploring his reputation and his work and why he is so polarising as an artist. We will think about the modernist art movement and its links to ‘primitivism’ thinking about the inspirations for artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani and Brancusi.
On Day 2, we will talk to artists and curators who are creating contemporary work that is responding to and addressing the legacy and heritage of empire, imperialism and slavery. We will finish with a discussion on the best way to indigenise and decolonise museums and art exhibitions.
This course is recommended for anyone interested in engaging with diverse interpretations of art and art history; or indeed anyone currently working in the arts keen to learn and discuss these ideas in a safe space.
