Jean-Etienne Liotard
Find out about the development of the medium of pastel in the 18th century, with Tate conservator Rosie Freemantle and conservation curator Jo Crook.
Liotard was known for his highly polished and finely crafted portraits, using pastel sticks that varied from very fine hard chalks to much softer and broader options. His attention to detail and ability to capture material in particular was well executed.
In this event, we explore the development of this medium since the 18th century by artists such as Liotard, Degas and Gainsborough, as well as the technical advances of its manufacturing and the challenges that conservators face today. The event will include a live demonstration in the making and use of pastels by conservation curator Jo Crook.
All tickets include a drink.
