In this hands-on workshop, learn how to find the image through paint.
Working on large canvases or large sheets of watercolour paper, participants will be encouraged to keep their surfaces wet using oil paints thinned with a drying medium.
This class is taught by artist Virginia Verran, using her ‘postcard project’ model, working with images from the Renaissance up until the present day. The second part of the day will focus on choosing a detail from the original image and working at a smaller scale.
About the tutor - Virginia Verran
Virginia Verran studied at Winchester School of Art and Chelsea School of Art and Design. She lives in London and works in a large studio in Bethnal Green. She has exhibited paintings and drawings in London, Cornwall, Scotland, Wales, Plymouth, Norway, Berlin, Holland, France, Belgium, Stuttgart, Osaka. She has shown in Whitechapel Opens, John Moores 20 and has work in the Arts Council Collection. In 2010 she won the Jerwood Drawing Prize.
She has taught for many years in a number of art schools including amongst others, Plymouth University and the Slade School of Art, but her main jobs are at Chelsea School of Art and Design and Falmouth University.
Her work is principally large, immersive paintings in which suggestions of movement, human or mechanical, are conveyed in either deep, layered space or, more recently, in staccato, graphic and complex webs. Drawing has allowed a new influx of imagery at varying scales that is intuitive, playful and immediately conveyed and utilises symbols and signs that work at an abstract, formal and percussive level but which also suggest a darker preoccupation with global anxieties of war, dislocation, and perceived threat from the unlimited space above us.
This class is also taking place on 10 October 2015.
This day is suitable for all levels of experience. It will focus on the fluid application of paint rather than palette/colour theory so a prior knowledge of the basic practicalities of painting would be helpful. This project is about discovery and building confidence as well as extending and revitalising an established practice. It requires open-mindedness and courage in the pursuit of finding the image.
The price includes all materials; oil paint, thinners, canvas, paper. Lunch and refreshments will also be provided, including a glass of wine.
Our short courses and classes offer the opportunity to explore subjects ranging from life drawing to the history of portraiture, led by expert tutors and practising artists. These courses introduce traditional art-making processes, as well as perspectives on the history of art and language.
