We offer a range of approaches to life drawing. Each two-day class, guided by practising artist tutors and held in the RA's historic Life Room, takes a different look at ways of depicting the human form. Browse our other upcoming classes, held over two weekends: 14 and 15 November, and 12 and 13 December 2015.
Within the class, students will explore how, through intense observation and instinctive use of materials, the model’s physical presence can be enhanced within their drawings. Through a series of quick and more sustained poses, students will gain confidence through creative drawing strategies.
Charcoal and chalk pastel will be used as the nature of these materials allows for an evolutionary development of responses, enhancing a flexibility of approach.
An open mindedness is encouraged rather than a singular progression towards a preconceived outcome.
Drawings created, in addition to being life studies, will document participants’ personal experiences within the RA’s historic Life Room – the sense of individual involvement being as much a part of the experience as any learned drawing technique.
As the course develops students will go on to explore the possibilities within figure composition, the model taking on a range of dynamic poses, participants discovering how bodies might visually interact to create images conveying both movement and design.
10.30am – 4.30pm each day.
About the tutor – Jeanette Barnes

All materials and lunch on both days will be provided.
Our short courses and classes offer the opportunity to explore subjects ranging from life drawing to the history of portraiture, led by expert tutors and practising artists. These courses introduce traditional art-making processes, as well as perspectives on the history of art and language.
