Dalí / Duchamp
Independent art historian and exhibition co-curator Professor Dawn Ades CBE FBA introduces 'Dalí / Duchamp', exploring the friendship and shared interests of two of art history’s most prominent figures.
Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dalí are two of the most famous artists of the 20th century, but they occupy very different positions in the pantheon. Duchamp apparently withdrew from the art world, preferring to go underground and play chess, while Dalí courted notoriety and became the first modern artist-celebrity. Duchamp is renowned as the inventor of the readymade and the hermetic father of conceptual art, while Dalí is seen as the defender of painting, champion of a retrograde artistic tradition to which Duchamp had dealt a death blow.
In this introductory talk by Professor Dawn Ades, discover Dalí and Duchamp’s unexpected friendship and their shared interests and attitudes to art and life. The talk will explore how the exhibition opens up far-reaching questions about the nature of modern art and its histories.
Unclaimed seats will be released at 12.55pm.
