America after the Fall: Painting in the 1930s
In the devastating wake of the Wall Street Crash, artists sought to capture the rapid social change and economic anxiety creating some of the 20th century’s most powerful art. We invite Friends to explore the story of a nation in flux through an evening of art historian-led exhibition tours, live jazz music, swing dancing and moonshine from the Grand Café’s speak-easy.
The evening will include exhibition tours of America after the Fall: Painting in the 1930s and a private view of Revolution: Russian Art 1917–1932. Friends will have the opportunity to jitterbug to big band jazz and sample the Grand Café’s bootlegged moonshine and American-style dishes.
Art historians Graham Greenfield and Grace Adams will lead tours of the exhibition throughout the evening:
7.15pm exhibition tour led by Graham Greenfield
7.45pm exhibition tour led by Grace Adams
8.15pm exhibition tour led by Graham Greenfield
8.45pm exhibition tour led by Grace Adams
The Main Galleries show, Revolution: Russian Art 1917–1932, will also stay open, giving Friends a chance to explore both exhibitions away from the crowds. For a taste of what to expect, have a look at the latest Friends private view images.
Please be aware that this event will be filmed and photographed for use by the Royal Academy in digital and printed marketing. If you do not wish to be filmed or photographed, please contact friends.events@royalacademy.org.uk.
