Ian Ritchie RA and Barbara Rae RA, who are, respectively, among Britain’s leading architects and painters, discuss the intersections of architecture and art within the context of the Summer Exhibition.

Professor Ian Ritchie CBE RA is one Britain’s most thoughtful and original architects. A remarkable artist and innovator, Ritchie has consistently encouraged experimentation and collaboration in his field, working in a way that dissolves the boundaries of architecture, engineering and industry. His architectural practice has realised many diverse landmark projects throughout Europe including the Reina Sofia Museum of Modern Art Glass Towers, Madrid, the Leipzig Glass Hall, EdF Pylons, Dublin Spire and RSC Courtyard Theatre.

Barbara Rae RA is a distinguished painter. Her paintings combine bright colours to create images that evoke landscapes while remaining resolutely abstract in composition. Educated at the Edinburgh College of Art in the 1960s, Rae then travelled extensively over Europe. Rae’s work has been included in many solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. In 1994 and 1999, she won tapestry commissions for The Festival Theatre, Edinburgh and for the Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh, respectively (both carried out by the Edinburgh Tapestry Company). Rae’s work is included in many private collections in Britain, Europe and the USA, as well as in many public and corporate collections.

About the RA Forum

The Royal Academy Forum is the RA’s long established forum for public debate on the arts, exploring ideas at the intersections of different artistic practices, and their interface with philosophical, political, social and economic issues and contexts.
