Nicholas Hawksmoor: The Man and The Myth
Free Talk
Monday 30 November 2015 1 - 2pm
The Reynolds Room, Burlington House, Royal Academy of Arts
Free, booking required.
Join us for this talk by Owen Hopkins, RA Architecture Programme Curator, who discusses Nicholas Hawksmoor’s career and shows how over their history Hawksmoor’s buildings have been ignored, abused, altered, recovered and celebrated.
Nicholas Hawksmoor (1662–1736) is today widely considered one of Britain’s greatest architects. More imaginative in his handling of mass than his mentor Sir Christopher Wren, and more assured in his detailing than his collaborator Sir John Vanbrugh, Hawksmoor is best known for his six great London churches.
In this talk, RA Architecture Programme Curator and author of a new book on Hawksmoor, Owen Hopkins, brings to light new perspectives on Hawksmoor’s career and uncovers the intriguing tale of how his works have been seen over history by such observers as John Soane, Denys Lasdun and Peter Ackroyd.
Owen Hopkins will be signing copies of his book From the Shadows: The Architecture and Afterlife of Nicholas Hawksmoor after the event.
Doors open at 12.30pm, no admittance will be granted for latecomers after 1pm. If you do not arrive before 1pm, your ticket will be released at that time to those waiting for returned tickets.
