Urban Jigsaw
Architects Maccreanor Lavington and urban designers East discuss their proposal for civic justice hubs directly accessible to local communities.
In July, the RA launched ‘Urban Jigsaw’ – an open call inviting architects to propose speculative uses for London’s unused brownfield sites. In this free, informal event, one of the architects chosen to develop their proposal for display in an exhibition in the RA’s Architecture Space presents their worked up project.

About the project
“We seek to convert potential land redundancy from outdated public functions into additional capacity directly accessible to the local community. Imminent reform of the justice system offers an opportunity to apply this approach to a sector with inherent potential to support the social infrastructure requirements which need to develop alongside London’s growth.”
About the architect
Maccreanor Lavington’s work is the result of rigorous observation and investigation of each projects physical and cultural context. They make architecture that is both contemporary and timeless. Their interest in creating ‘ordinary’ places for living and working is expressed at different scales; from the careful design of public spaces to an inventive yet pragmatic use of materials and detailing.
East is an award winning architecture, landscape and urban design practice established in London since 1995. They are interested in places, uses and the way they come about. By places they mean cities, spaces within them, buildings, and landscapes. They concentrate on projects of public relevance and have a close understanding of urban change.
