See a part of the RA usually hidden behind closed doors – Britain’s oldest fine-art school. Jonathan Stubbs, the Schools Capital Campaigns Manager, will take you on a fascinating tour and reveal this hub of artistic activity.
The tour will help you to discover how your Friends membership contributes to this unique academy and learn about the exciting redevelopment planned for the RA Schools' 250th anniversary in 2019.
The RA Schools offers a free postgraduate programme in contemporary art. Former students include J. M. W. Turner, William Blake and John Everett Millais, all the way to Turner Prize nominee Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Eddie Peake, Catherine Story and Matthew Darbyshire. Established in 1769 and still independent, it is the longest-running art school in Britain and continues to fulfil its founding aim to support and train the next generation of artists. Over the last 40 years Friends have played a vital role in ensuring that the RA Schools remain free for the students who attend it.
Founded in 1977 to support the RA Schools and exhibitions, our Friends have been instrumental to the running of the Academy ever since. As a part of Friends week, we are running a series of events to reflect on the contribution Friends have made and to look forward to the future of the Academy in 2018 and beyond.
