Become a Friend

Boy apprentices at work in the School of Book Production, Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1938.

Friends explore the Museum and Special Collections of renowned art, design and fashion college Central St Martins, which house some of the most innovative fashion pieces created by staff and students.

The museum was set up in the 1890s, and in the late 1800s and early 1900s the college had a budget to acquire items it thought would aid student education. The resulting collection is described by the Head of Museum Judy Willocks, who will be leading the tour, as “like a mini V&A”, with early printed books and manuscripts, Japanese wood engravings, embroideries and textiles.

Since opening, the College has championed experimentation, innovation, risk-taking, questioning and discovery, and the selection of objects Friends view will trace the history of work created in line with these values at the College over time. After viewing archival material, Friends have the opportunity to rummage in the college’s stores, home to nearly 20,000 objects.

This event will also take place on 21 February
