Join fellow Friends on this walking tour of the historic Royal Arsenal, where Friends discover the history of the Woolwich site from Roman times, through the First World War to the present day.
With a number of historical buildings, some of which are said to have been designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor, the Royal Arsenal site has rich military and historical significance.
During the First World War the Royal Arsenal employed 80,000 people and was the biggest munitions factory in the world. In addition to learning the fascinating history of the Arsenal, Friends will encounter and explore the public art that adorns the site.
Friends will also learn about the area’s extensive redevelopment, both into a residential area (Crossrail will be arriving in 2020) and also into a new cultural quarter, a project led by Greenwich Council. Please note that this walking tour will generally focus on the exterior of buildings.
This event is also taking place on 28 October 2016.
