Friends tour the unique and humorous Penguin Random House art collection, which focuses primarily on limited-edition prints featuring text. The collection boasts work by British artists including Michael Craig Martin RA, Sir Peter Blake and Cornelia Parker RA.
Penguin Random House’s art collection at their offices at 80 Strand is a living, breathing part of the office environment. Artworks are discussed in staff lectures by practicing artists and performance art takes place in the office, in which staff are often encouraged to take part. Managing Director Joanna Prior discusses the philosophy behind Penguin's collection, while Nigel Frank of Frank Hindley Art Consultants sheds light on the process of finding suitable works to add to the collection.
The collection’s sole commission is of renowned American artist Harland Miller, who was asked to create a series of paintings of Penguin book jackets with alternative titles, which are hung in Penguin Random House offices around the world. Friends will also have an opportunity to learn about Penguin Books design studios. Penguin run an annual design award competition, which gives young designers an opportunity to create book jackets for Penguin Classics, with the winner awarded a work placement at Penguin.
