Booking and attending Friends excursions and events
Join Friends of the RA for a tour of this extraordinary and unparalleled collection of contemporary art by female artists, featuring works by Eileen Cooper RA, Barbara Hepworth, Mali Morris RA, Paula Rego and Maggi Hambling.
This tour of Murray Edwards College, led by curator Eliza Gluckman and head gardener Jo Cobb, will examine the paintings, prints, and sculpture that are displayed throughout the College and its grounds. With over 450 artworks by women artists, the New Hall Art Collection is regarded as the most significant of its kind in Europe. Housed in the Grade II-listed Brutalist Murray Edwards College (designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon), the collection enables viewers to trace art movements in a variety of media over more than 50 years, a period during which women have achieved greater parity and prominence in the visual arts.
The collection first came to life when Mary Kelly donated a number of works after her time as artist-in residence at New Hall and Kettle’s Yard in 1986. It has evolved and continues to do so through gifts and loans from artists and alumnae, including Hambling and Rego.
Works by Mali Morris RA, Sandra Blow, Paula Rego, Lubaina Himid, Vanessa Jackson RA, Maggi Hambling, Shani Rhys James and Lin Tian Miao are housed in the college’s iconic dome, a Brutalist beauty only 200 metres from the currently closed Kettle’s Yard. Other works on display include significant pieces by Rose Wylie RA, Elisabeth Frink, Dame Elizabeth Blackadder RA, Barbara Rae RA, Sonia Lawson RA and Chantal Joffe RA In the gardens, Friends can see works by Barbara Hepworth, Naomi Press and Nicola Hicks.
