Friends excursions: Lord’s Cricket Ground
Join fellow Friends for a tour of “the home of cricket”, with a special introduction to the works of art held in the clubhouse from the curator of collections, Adam Chadwick.
It is a real privilege to have Adam Chadwick’s introduction to the collection at Lord’s, as this is not part of their regular tours. We begin in the famous Long Room, where we discover the portraits of some of the cricket’s best-known figures such as W. G. Grace, an amateur player but widely considered to be one of the game’s greatest ever players. The club will have just completed a major re-hang of their portraits in February so this will be an opportunity to see new works in the collection.
Our tour continues with a behind-the-scenes visit to the players’ dressing rooms, the museum and a visit to the striking media centre, designed in 1999 by Czech architect Jan Kaplický, and awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize for architecture in 1999. We also have time to see the iconic original Ashes trophy and hear the true story of its origins.
