Join fellow RA Friends for a private morning lecture on the ‘Beyond Caravaggio’ exhibition at the National Gallery, given by art historian and Caravaggio specialist Sian Walters.
Beyond Caravaggio is the first major UK exhibition to explore the impact of the Italian artist, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s (1571–1610) work, both on the art of his contemporaries as well as on his followers. Artists as diverse as Gentileschi, Valentin de Boulogne and Honthorst were drawn to the dramatic lighting and intense naturalism in his strikingly original paintings. Many artists admired Caravaggio and experimented with imitating different aspects of his work, which helped to disseminate his style across Europe, giving rise to an international movement known as ‘Caravaggism’.
Our private lecture will offer a fascinating introduction to this blockbuster exhibition. The day includes an afternoon timed-entry to the exhibition and complimentary audio guide.
Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available on arrival from 10.30am; the lecture begins at 11am.
