Join fellow Friends for a guided tour of the private West Cemetery at Highgate, with its atmospheric Lebanon Circle Vaults, Egyptian Avenue and recently opened Terrace Catacombs.
Opened in 1839 as one of the “Magnificent Seven” cemeteries, built to relieve the overcrowding of small inner-London graveyards, Highgate has some of the finest funerary architecture in the country and has been designated by English Heritage a Grade I-listed park. On our private tour, Friends will learn about the symbolism of the monuments’ architecture and the history behind some of the cemetery’s most interesting residents.
Our tour of the gated West Cemetery (which can only be accessed by pre-arrangement) includes the Lebanon Circle Vaults, which surround a massive ancient cedar tree that long predates the cemetery itself. We'll also stop in Egyptian Avenue to learn more about the great interest in Egyptian architecture and memorialisation of the dead at the time the cemetery was created.
This event will also be held on 25 April 2018.
