Collage: Form, Space & Time
One-day Practical Workshop
Sunday 24 January 2016 10.30am - 5.30pm
Learning Studio, Burlington House, Royal Academy of Arts
£240. Includes all materials, lunch and wine reception.
Terms and conditions
In this one day workshop, practising artist Sean Steadman will explore how classical concepts of Form, Space and Time can be rethought using techniques associated with collage, and how collage can be incorporated into more traditional practices of painting.
Although collage has been a part of artistic practice for centuries, it is only since the 20th century that it has become widely recognised as central to the creative process, and an important art form in its own right.
The (re)combination of elements, or to ‘collagé’, has been used by modern masters including George Braque and Pablo Picasso, who incorporated different materials such as wood and paper into their Cubist paintings. The practice of dis-assembling and re-assembling is linked to the irreverent playfulness of Dada and mirrored in the work of the Surrealists – from Max Ernst to Man Ray. Collage also remains central to many contemporary artists’ work, including David Hockney’s photomontages of desert highways, the butterfly ‘paintings’ of Damien Hirst, and was most recently explored in an exhibition of Joseph Cornell’s magical box assemblages at the Royal Academy.
Collage is both playful and serious, can be delicate and disturbing, might be pleasing to the eye, distracting or politically challenging. In this exciting practical workshop, you will be introduced to the history and techniques of collage, exploring how you might incorporate it into your own creative practice, relevant to different styles and mediums. Collage will be introduced both as a way of thinking, and a method or practice, in a workshop designed to be playful and fun, yet challenging and rewarding.
