Abstract artist Emyr Williams leads a course exploring visual creativity: using sculpture to unlock invention; exploring experimental drawing techniques; using collage to explore scale; and making paint work harder to maximise colour expressiveness.

An artwork can be started in so many different ways, and often the most innocuous of approaches can yield the most inventive and surprising of outcomes, when the eyes are “switched on” to what is happening in front of them.

Through a direct and forthright use of a range of simple everyday materials, participants will explore working spontaneously to develop an inventive visual responsiveness to materials and their expressive potential in both two and three-dimensions. The ambition is to make works which will not just look exciting in their own right, but can facilitate imaginative decision-making for future, personal work.

During the four-week course, participants will be working in three-dimension using card, as well as with drawing, painting and collage from a number of different starting points, including primary and secondary source materials, abstraction, and memory. Each of these subjects will afford a wide range of possibilities for being expressive, experimental, and demanding in scale, form, layering, line, tone, structure and colour.

Each session runs from 6.30pm – 9.30pm

Wednesday 4 April
Session one will explore sculpture:
- Working in three-dimensions using card, looking at plane, scale, texture and space
- A historical look at sculpture from different times and cultures

Wednesday 11 April
Session two will explore drawing:
- Working from still-life exploring form, line, contrast modification, direction, and pace
- A historical look at drawing from different times and cultures

Wednesday 18 April
Session three will explore collage:
- Exploring colour theory
- Paint facture
- Looking at scale, colour relationships, and layering
- A historical look at colour from different times and cultures
