Unidentified photographer, The Life Room in the Royal Academy Schools, ca.1954-1958.

Collection of the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

This practical course will guide participants to make new, dynamic self-confident drawings, through both technical demonstrations and personal experimentation, providing a space to develop individual self-expression.

In 1966, Bryan Kneale RA was made the first Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy where he observed drawing was experiencing “something of a recession”. Why had drawing, the single most direct vehicle of expression for hundreds of years, been neglected within our art schools? And why, even now, is the Life Room less than central to the teaching here at the Royal Academy?

Artist David Price explores these questions, considering how we can make drawing relevant without relying on tropes or conventions. We can still learn from the Old Masters, but they were young masters once; alive and responding to their own time. We must look at the art of our own time too, so that what we make is a genuine response to what we see and feel.

This class will guide participants by beginning with a familiar place – the human body, and considering how we see and draw using traditional ideas and solid foundations. You will be encouraged to experiment and explore new ideas, fresh methods and materials to breathe life and colour into your drawings.

We will look at artists living today who have made the human body central to their practice and see what we can learn from them. Participants will find their own form of self-expression and individual drawing voice.

The number of participants is strictly limited to enable detailed feedback from the course tutor.

Minimum age 18. If you have any accessibility needs, please contact academic.programmes@royalacademy.org.uk.
