Artist and weaver Ismini Samanidou leads a course examining how visual references from photography and artworks can be interpreted into woven form. She'll focus on using colour, proportion and texture to develop ideas for a finished piece of work – an approach that is central to her practice.
A variety of weaving techniques will be demonstrated, embracing both traditional and contemporary approaches to the medium.
Over the weekend, using a small frame loom and threads from Ismini’s studio materials collection, the you'll go through the processes of choosing images, developing a colour palette and making at least one piece of finished weaving.
Participants can bring their own visual references to work from or will be able to choose from a selection of works relating to the RAs collection and exhibition programme.
Ismini Samanidou is an artist specialising in weaving and her work is in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Crafts Council and numerous corporate and public collections. She was the first weaver to be invited as artist in residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in the USA.
