From Life
Sharpen your pencils and draw a model! Get to know the basics of drawing people "from life" in this special holiday workshop in the RA’s historic Life Room, suitable for ages 11+.
This holiday we’re opening up the RA Schools' historic Life Room for a series of workshops about observational drawing skills, designed for children aged 11 and over and their families. Working from a costumed model, learn about the techniques and tips used by all the great artists who have drawn in this famous room, which is rarely open to the public. Guided by an experienced drawing tutor, you can create your own masterpiece to take home and put on display.
The Life Room has been used as a classroom for 150 years by students of the RA Schools. It is built in a semi-circle shape with round benches, and windows that let in just the right amount of light. The special design means everyone has an equally good view of the stage at the front, where a model stands in different poses for the students to draw. This type of class is called “life” drawing because the artists copy from a living person instead of a flat picture, which helps them understand how bodies look in three dimensions.
All materials provided. Booking is essential. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
