The Ancestors
Mary Beard joins Royal Academicians Cathie Pilkington and Alison Wilding to discuss portrait busts through the ages and the bust's ability to expose the past values of our society.
In this one-hour conversation, artists Cathie Pilkington and Alison Wilding (responsible for the RA’s latest display The Ancestors) join Mary Beard to reveal how artists today are calling into question the past cultural values attributed to the portrait bust and its display.
Described as "art historical fly tipping", The Ancestors brings together busts from the RA Collection to talk about material language, then and now. Collectively busts can tell us about who and what kinds of people a society has valued (and, by exclusion, who has been overlooked).
This event is followed by a Q&A.
