Friends of the RA book first
An arts and craft workshop for the Friends of the RA, inspired by the Hockney portraits. Create an Art on A4 with experienced art educators while enjoying a fresh buffet breakfast, followed by a Private View of the Summer Exhibition and David Hockney: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life.
This workshop will draw inspiration from the Hockney portraits exhibition and play with their 2D form on A4 paper. We will use a variety of mixed media, from felt to foam, to build up colourful reliefs that embody the idea of going off the page. We will also take inspiration from Yinka Shonibare’s use of Dutch wax cloth, which can been seen on his sculpture in the Summer Exhibition, to create collages and build upon the theme of making the 2D A4 page come to life in 3D form.
Two of the RA’s experienced artist educators will lead the workshop and offer guidance and encouragement throughout the morning. A4 sheets and all artistic materials will be provided, as well as a light, child-friendly breakfast buffet. Continue your morning with access to the Summer Exhibition and David Hockney exhibition from 9am, before they open to the public.
Participants are invited to submit their work in the Art on A4 competition for Friends. The winner of the Art on A4 competition will receive a year’s contract as a chosen and promoted artist with CultureLabel, including mentorship. The winner and five runners-up will also have their work created into a limited-edition print, to be displayed at a special event at the Royal Academy.
All entries will be judged by a panel from CultureLabel and the Royal Academy in September.
