Ai Weiwei
Exhibition curator Adrian Locke introduces ‘Ai Weiwei’ and explains how the artist has used his art to comment on contemporary Chinese society.
It is only ten years since Ai Weiwei had his first solo museum exhibition in Europe; since then he has established an enviable international reputation. Despite the fact that his art remains in huge demand across the world, he continues to be better known as an outspoken critic of the Chinese authorities, especially following his illegal detention in 2011 and a subsequent, much-publicised tax case. During this introductory talk, we find out how Ai Weiwei, since his return to China in 1993, uses his art, not just his words or cyberspace to comment on contemporary Chinese society today.
Doors open at 12.30pm, no admittance will be granted for latecomers after 1pm. If you do not arrive before 1pm, your ticket will be released at that time to those waiting for returned tickets.
