Watercolour study of woman hacking turnips, 1 January 1884

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

This watercolour sketch depicts a woman about to cut off the top of a turnip in a field. Turnip harvesting appears in Clausen's major painting of 1883, Winter Work (Tate Britain) and the slightly earlier oil sketch, December (c. 1882). The date inscribed on the drawing, '1 January 1884', seems to preclude its status as a preparatory sketch. However, Clausen continued to be interested in this subject after 1883 as is shown by his watercolour, Hoeing Turnips (1884; private collection).
