Solomon Alexander Hart RA, Watercolour study of Saint Barbara after Palma Vecchio

Watercolour study of Saint Barbara after Palma Vecchio, Probably 1842

Solomon Alexander Hart RA (April 1806 - 1881)

RA Collection: Art

This is a copy after part of Palma Vecchio's triptych altarpiece for the Scuola dei Bombardieri in Santa Maria Formosa,Venice (1523-4). The panel showing Saint Barbara stands between images of Saint Anthony the Hermit and Saint Sebastian.

Solomon Hart spent about a year in Italy in 1842, on the advice of the Duke of Sussex whose portrait he was commissioned to paint. This drawing and a number of others in the album are copied from paintings that he studied during his travels in Italy.

These drawings all relate to Solomon Hart's visit to Italy in 1841-1842. The artist was advised to travel in Europe by the Duke of Sussex, whose portrait he was painting. Leaving England in September 1841, with letters of introduction from the Duke, Hart spent a year in Italy producing topographical and architectural sketches as well as small watercolour copies of paintings and frescoes. Originally he intended to publish some of his travel drawings as engravings but instead they formed the basis for a number of paintings of Italian history and interiors.

These drawings and watercolours are all copied from Old Master paintings. Many of them date from Solomon Hart's visit to Italy (1841-1842), where he drew from frescoes and paintings in Florence, Venice, Perugia and Rome. However, some copies after Titian and others were made at the Louvre in Paris in 1845. Hart also made small copies after Renaissance paintings at the National Gallery and Dulwich Portrait Gallery in London, and drew from prints after Holbein and other artists.
