Richard Redgrave RA, Watercolour and chalk drawing for The Fortune Hunter

Watercolour and chalk drawing for The Fortune Hunter, c. 1843

Richard Redgrave RA (1804 - 1888)

RA Collection: Art

This is a preliminary drawing of The Fortune Hunter , in watercolour, chalk, pen and ink, which Redgrave painted and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843. The painting depicts a man pursuing another women whilst his former lady of interest is sitting behind a screen and hears this encounter.

There are a few differences between this drawing and the final painting. In the drawing there is a dog between the two women at their feet, a plinth with a plant in a vase on the left, and the objects on the top of the cabinet on the right of the drawing are not depicted in the final painting. In the painting the standing female figure is holding a fan in her right hand but she is not depicted with a fan in the preliminary drawing.
