Sir George Clausen RA, View of the Piazza San Marco, Venice

View of the Piazza San Marco, Venice, 1908?

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

A view of the Piazza San Marco in Venice from the high, west facade gallery of the Basilica San Marco. A flag pole on the Basilica bisects the composition on the vertical axis, presenting the Basilica and gilded horses on the left and a view towards the statue of Theodore of Amasea and the canal of San Marco on the right. There is a 'frame' of blank paper around the image.

Sir George Clausen is known to have visited Venice in May 1908 and there are two further drawings relating to this trip in the Royal Academy collection; a view of the Basilica of San Marco (05/2739) and a view of the Ponte di Rialto (05/2742). Another drawing (04/ 2869) possibly dates from the same trip.
