RA Collection: Art

The President's Chair is an ornate gilt bergere chair covered in red morocco leather with a shaped back and a loose buttoned seat cushion. The wooden frame is ornately carved and gilded with a central motif of a artist's palette with brushes, dividers, quills and scrolls which represent the three branches of art represented in the Royal Academy of Arts, namely painting, sculpture and architecture.

The date of this specially commissioned chair is not known but it is depicted in Benjamin West's Self-Portrait of 1793 (03/285) and in Henry Singleton's The Royal Academicians in General Assembly of 1795 (03/1310).
