This was engraved after the painting by Landseer exhibited in 1824 at the British Institution, London (cat. 185). According to art historian Richard Ormond, 'one of Landseer's best known and most controversial paintings, The Cat's Paw attracted immediate attention when it was first exhibited, and it has continued to shock people ever since.' (Ormond 1981, p.56)
