F. Ernest Jackson ARA, The Black Hat

The Black Hat, c. 1910

F. Ernest Jackson ARA (1872 - 1945)

RA Collection: Art

This lithograph differs from another print with the same title though like that work it probably also depicts the artist's wife, Gertrude. Jackson produced a number of portraits of Gertrude, in oils and watercolour and as lithographs, particularly around the time of their marriage in 1910. This lithograph is similar to 'Effet de Lumière' which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1911.

Gertrude Anne Jackson (née Templeton) was a professional singer who met F. Ernest Jackson while working for Beerbohm Tree's company at His Majesty's Theatre where the artist was designing sets. After her marriage she became a bookbinder.
