Sir George Clausen RA, Study of a boy carrying a basket on his hip
Sir George Clausen RA, Study of a boy carrying a basket on his hip

Study of a boy carrying a basket on his hip, probably late 1890s/ early 1900s

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

This study probably relates to paintings of barn interiors that Clausen worked on around 1895. These interiors often feature boys or men engaged in activities such as threshing, winnowing or hauling sacks of grain. Although the basket-like object carried on the boy's hip in this drawing appears too small to be a winnowing fan, a basket of a similar size appears in the right foreground of the oil painting The Golden Barn (1901; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool).
