Sir George Clausen RA, Study for 'Sunset'

Study for 'Sunset', ca. 1907

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

This drawing of a thatched barn and other buildings arranged around a pond is a preparatory sketch for the painting Sunset, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1907 (no.136; untraced).

Clausen apparently altered few of the compositional elements seen in this sketch, and the only major differences are the more compact rendering of the tree at centre right and the addition of fencing at far right. Another study for this composition, 05/1564, has detailed colour notes and a figure bending towards the pool on the far left.

There is a similar drawing of buildings and trees around a pool with fencing in a sketchbook dated 1906 at Bimingham City Museum and Art Gallery.
