Sir George Clausen RA, Study for 'A Summer Morning'

Study for 'A Summer Morning', ca. 1925

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

This is a preparatory landscape study for Clausen's 1925 Royal Academy exhibit, A Summer Morning (no.159; untraced). The drawing has been squared-up ready for transfer to a larger scale.

Although the view seen in this study is closely comparable to that in the finished painting, Clausen edited some details including reducing the number of pollarded trees and making the two foreground willow trees appear windswept. He also added two shire horses at the left of the composition.

There are three further loose-leaf preparatory studies and sketchbook studies relating to this work in the Royal Academy Collection.
