George Frederic Watts RA, Studies of women and children of the Prinsep family

Studies of women and children of the Prinsep family

George Frederic Watts RA (1817 - 1904)

RA Collection: Art

A sheet of seven studies in black and white chalk of women and children. The dress and poses are very similar to those in 02/1059-65 and and both probably depict members and friends of the Prinsep family. The standing figure wearing a half-length cloak suggests the unconventional dress sense for which Sara Prinsep and her sisters (known as the Pattle sisters) were known. In Watts's portrait of Sophia Dalrymple and Sara Prinsep (c. 1850-51, Watts Gallery), the latter wears a very similar cloak and stands in a similar pose.
