George Frederic Watts RA, Studies of limbs, possibly for 'Orlando pursuing the Fata Morgana'

Studies of limbs, possibly for 'Orlando pursuing the Fata Morgana', 1860s?

George Frederic Watts RA (1817 - 1904)

RA Collection: Art

The drawings on this sheet are possibly for Watts's painting 'Fata Morgana' (1865, Private collection) in which the pose of the Fata Morgana's left leg and arm is very similar to those depicted on this sheet. The subject is taken from Boiardo's epic poem Orlando Innamorato (1495).

An earlier, and better known, version of this subject by Watts ('Orlando Pursuing the Fata Morgana',1846-8 Leicester Museums and Galleries) depicts the figure of Fata Morgana in a different pose with part of her left leg covered by drapery.
