Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA, Sir Walter Scott

Sir Walter Scott, 2 October 1833

After Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (1769 - 1830)

RA Collection: Art

This line-engraving is based on a painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence, now in the Royal Collection Trust. The portrait, began in 1820, was commissioned by George IV and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1827. Whereas the painting includes more of the surrounding area, the print focuses on the head, torso and equipment of the writer.

This impression was one of a group of prints which the engraver John H. Robinson presented to the RA as his Diploma Work. As Robinson's own note indicates, it was printed when the plate was 'not quite finished', and as a result the impression is particularly rich.
