RA Collection: Art

While best-known for his paintings of historical and literary subjects, Richard Westall also painted several portraits, notably of Lord Byron. In this self-portrait, painted shortly before Westall was elected as an Academician, the artist emerges from a black background, his unkempt hair and purposeful stare conveying a Byronic intensity.
