Alfred Elmore RA, Self-portrait of Alfred Elmore, R.A.

Self-portrait of Alfred Elmore, R.A., 1860's (?)

Alfred Elmore RA (1815 - 1881)

RA Collection: Art

After studying at the Royal Academy Schools and travelling around Europe, Alfred Elmore began exhibiting historical and genre scenes at the Royal Academy in 1844. He was particularly interested in depicting royalty in scenes that gave him an opportunity to reveal intense human emotions at moments of high historical drama. His sympathetic 'behind-the-scenes' depictions of fateful incidents in the lives of Marie Antoinette and Mary, Queen of Scots had a strong popular appeal.

This intimate self-portrait was probably painted for the artist himself as it remained in his family's possession until given to the Academy by a descendant in 1926.
