Richard Eurich RA, Queen of the Sea, 1911

Queen of the Sea, 1911, 1954

Richard Eurich RA (1903 - 1992)

RA Collection: Art

Queen of the Sea was inspired by the artist’s childhood memories of the 1911 Coronation of George V and Mary, when his family was on holiday in Whitby.

The scene teems with details that delighted the artist as an eight-year-old, including an aviary of colourful birds, a military band, hot air balloon, ships, flags, and harlequin. On the right, the boy Eurich observes the festivities in pyjamas from his first-floor bedroom. A plaque below reads 'Richard Eurich stayed here, 1911'.
