Richard Lane ARA (1800 - 1872)
RA Collection: Art
A pencil portrait of the artist John Jackson. Lane used the same format employed by George Dance for his famous 'heads', showing only the head and shoulders of the sitter who is viewed in profile from the left.
Jackson painted a number of his fellow artists and Academicians including James Northcote, Thomas Stothard, Benjamin West, George Dance and Francis Chantrey. An oil sketch head and shoulders portrait of Lane by Jackson exists in a private collection and it is possible that the two agreed to exchange portrait of each other.
Lane was a talented engraver who reproduced various paintings by Sir Thomas Lawrence, including 'Red Riding Hood' which earned him election as an associate-engraver of the Royal Academy. A letter in the Royal Academy Archive dated 31st August 1835 indicates that this drawing and 09/1992 were sent by Lane to Keightley for his "autograph book" after the death of Sir Thomas.
