George Harcourt exhibited this painting at the 1922 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, where it was reproduced in the illustrated catalogue. The ‘Three Sisters’ of the title may be his daughters, Mary Edeva Harcourt (1901-1984), Elizabeth Aletha Harcourt (1903-1985) and Dorothea Anne Adelene Harcourt (1907-1985), all of whom became artists.
