RA Collection: Art
As a young man, King Charles III was a keen polo player competing at high level. Depicted here when Prince of Wales, he is dressed in jodhpurs and riding hat, with his polo mallet in his hands. He retired from the sport in 2005. The vivid colouring combined with the economic application of paint is characteristic of Procktor’s approach to portraiture.
